About the region
Ohrid is a city in the southwestern part of Macedonia and an administrative center of the municipality with the same name. It is located on the northeastern coast of Lake Ohrid, which shares its name with the city. Ohrid and Lake Ohrid are one of the main tourist destinations in Macedonia. Ohrid is the eighth largest city in Macedonia, with a total population of 38.818 inhabitants (as of 2021).
Due to its numerous churches and monasteries, the city is often referred to as the Balkan and European Jerusalem. Ohrid is also known as the “City of Light”, which is a literal translation of its old name – Lychnid. The Ohrid Region is enlisted in the World Heritage of UNESCO.
